How Does a Document Scanner Work?

If you work with hard copy documents, you're going to need a document scanner a lot. Document scanners are of three types-flatbed, hand-held and sheet-fed. Of these, flatbed scanners work in a way that requires users to place the scannable document on the glass pane inside the device. Within the flatbed scanner lies an image sensor which moves down the page and copies its contents.

Pressure Canner

Hand-held scanners are used manually by the user. Here, the user must manually move the sensor over the length of the document so that it is scanned.

Pressure Canner

A sheet-fed scanner is just like a printer in the sense that it glides the sheet of paper over the sensor to get a scanned image of the page.

The CCD Sensor: Usually, scanners use a charge-coupled device (CCD) or a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) for its image sensor. However, drum scanners work with a photomultiplier tube as its image sensor. The image sensor of most document scanners comprises a range of charge-coupled devices. This refers to the device responsible for the movement of electrical charge from inside the device to a situation where it can be manipulated or converted into digital values.

This CCD range works through photo-sensitive diodes that convert light they catch into an electric signal carrying the same data. In flatbed scanners, the CCD array has a light within the scanner that brightens up the page and makes it easier for the array to read. Usually, sensors work in a three color mode - RGB. This means that the document's image will be separated into these three images - red, green and blue - by a lens before they are replaced when they can be seen on a computer.

The CIS Sensor: Here, the contact image sensor is different. It contains hundreds of RGB LED lights. When in combination, they become white light. To scan a document, the sensor is placed really close to the document with a glass pane separating them. When the document is scanned, it throws up white light. At this point, sensors pick up the image of the document.

Transfer to the computer: The scanning process ends with the scanned image being transferred to the attached computer. A document scanner can be attached to a computer by way of a USB, Small Computer System Interface, a group of computers connected to a common scanner or by FireWire. The language scanners understand and read is called TWAIN. These language drivers are usually accompanied by programs like PhotoShop and form part of the installation CD which comes with the scanner you buy.

Once the image is available on the computer, it can be put into different file types such as PDF for document viewing, or PNG which shows an uncompressed image with very high quality but which uses a lot of memory space, and JPG, another file compression tool that reduces the size of image files and consequently its image quality.

So, if you need a document scanner, choose wisely from the above types and ensure that you get the most out of it.

Security Center - How to Remove This Fake Security Software

There is nothing 'secure' about Security Center. If you are one of the unfortunate thousands of people with this spyware infection on your computer, you must get rid of it quickly. Security Center spreads through trojans Bundo and Zlob and will destroy your system if given the chance it needs. It will hijack your internet browser, adjust your desktop, annoy you with popups, and attempt to steal your credit card information using high pressure marketing tactics and fake scans. Don't let another moment pass. Get rid of Security Center now.

Pressure Canner

Before Security Center pop-up ads make you throw your computer out of the window, let me tell you how to remove the threat. If your system is sluggish, if your desktop has changed, if your homepage has been hijacked, and if you are constantly annoyed by pop-ups then you definitely have this virus or another just like it. You need to get rid of any spyware threat, because the most evil spyware will record your keystrokes and use your bank information and personal information to steal your identity. It's a nightmare.

Pressure Canner

If you are an advanced computer user you can attempt to manually remove this awful spyware, but I only recommend experts take a shot at this. If you do consider yourself an expert, first backup your system and registry and then proceed to delete all SecurityCenter files from your program files folder, your start menu, and your HKEY_LOCAL_USER folder.

Automatic Removal - I recommend automatic removal even for experts, as a simple slip-up can be deadly to your system if you try the manual route. To automatically remove this infection you just need to run a trusted and reviewed spyware removal tool. I primarily use Spyware Doctor, it provides a free scan to see if you're infected, and has terrific customer service and future protection against similar threats.

Don't let spyware thieves rob you of your system files and of your identity. Head over to my site, download the scanner of your choice, and remove Security Center.

The 2 Types of Pressure Canners

There are basically two types of pressure canner; one is the weighted gauge, and the other is the dial gauge.

Pressure Canner

The appearance of a weighted gauge resembles a disk that is attached to a vent port, which controls the internal pressure. This disk would rattle during the processing, which releases some amount of air and vapor. As they are able to control the pressure during the processing, we do not need to constantly keep an eye on its precision and accuracy when it is processing. The sounds of the weighted gauge rattling are the indication that the canner is sustaining the correct pressure. One disadvantage of weighted gauge canners is that at higher altitudes where the air pressure of the atmosphere is different, the accuracy of the weighted gauge will be affected.

Pressure Canner

The other type is the dial gauge. Unlike the weighted gauge, you will need to keep an eye on the dial gauge. The dial gauge is stuck to the cover, where you can refer to its needle that point at the pressure available in the canner. When you get a new dial gauge, do have it tested to ensure its accuracy. Experts recommend that these should be checked yearly.

It is important that both types of pressure canner are accurate. If the readings are lower than the real pressure, the food inside will become over-processed. However, when it comes to safety concerns, this is not a concern. In contrast, readings that are higher than the real pressure can cause under-processing, which may cause the food to be unsafe to be eaten. This is because you need enough pressure to get the food cooked, and being under-processed means that there is not enough pressure to get the food cooked. Thus, it is important that your gauges are accurate to avoid any mishaps.

Doubles as a large capacity pressure cooker. Gleaming, polished finish for lasting beauty. Cooking/canning rack and complete instruction/recipe booklet. 23 Qt. capacity.

Presto 1781 23-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker/Canner Specifications

The USDA recommends pressure canning as the only safe method for low-acid foods such as vegetables, meats, and poultry. The Presto 23-quart pressure canner is more than adequate for any home canning needs. It's a professional-quality tool, made of heavy-duty aluminum, with stay-cool handles and a strong-lock steel lid. An accompanying rack fits down into the pot to keep jars up off the bottom, so that liquid can circulate underneath. And it can do double duty as a large pressure cooker. It's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor.

The sturdy lid locks down during canning or cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. The pressure dial gauge gives an accurate reading so that pressure can be kept constant during canning. This pressure canner is also a cooker that's useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains more than 50 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roasts--even sweets like English Plum Pudding or Brown Bread! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork, or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture.

Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this aluminum pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The lid of the Presto 23-quart pressure canner is not immersible. In addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The dial gauge is delicate; detailed care instructions are found in the accompanying booklet. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 14 inches in diameter (17 inches including handles) and 15-1/2 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

Grandma's Peach Canning Recipe

Grandma loved to bake peach pies or top pancakes with peaches instead of syrup. During the summer months, she would buy baskets of seconds and freeze them. Freezing peaches was much easier and faster than canning them, so she rarely bothered with canned fruit. Since she didn't have a vacuum sealer, she used containers to hold her peaches. However, Nan, my mother, and I all use a vacuum sealer to prevent freezer burn. I really recommend this recipe over the more traditional peach canning recipe, because it is so simple to do and is not as dangerous as using a pressure canner. (Those things make me nervous.)

Pressure Canner

Ingredients:

Pressure Canner

Fresh peaches

3 cups of sugar

4 cups of water

Directions:

1. Wash peaches thoroughly.

2. Cut the fruit in half and remove the pit.

3. Peel the skin from the peaches.

4. Bring water to a boil.

5. Add your sugar to the boiling water and stir it in until it is thoroughly dissolved.

6. Let the syrup cool. Grandma put hers in the fridge for an hour.

7. Put three to four peaches into your container. Add enough syrup to thoroughly cover your peaches, but be sure to leave about an inch of room if you are using traditional containers. (You should use approximately 1/2 cup of syrup for each pound of peaches.)

8. Seal and label your container and place it in the freezer. (If you use a vacuum sealer, freeze the fruit and syrup for an hour or so before sealing or the syrup may get sucked out.)

Your peaches should last for a year, but if you are anything like my family, you will run out before next spring.

How To Decide Whether To Use a Water-Bath Canner or Pressure Canner

Canning, or as some in the Appalachian Mountains say, putting up, is a way of preserving food safely for long periods of time. This is either by pressure canning or boiling-water bath canning.

Pressure Canner

How do you decide which method to use? Let's look first at the food. Foods are classified as either low or high acid foods. The acid level is based on the pH of the food. For a food to be a high-acid, its pH must be 4.6 or less. If the pH is higher, then the food has very little natural acid and is referred to as a low-acid food.

Pressure Canner

High acid foods include all fruits, tomatoes, and pickled vegetables. The boiling-water or water bath canning method is used for these foods. A large pot will work or you can purchase a water bath canner. If you are going to use a large pot you have on hand make sure that the pot is deep enough to have at least 2 inches of water over the top of the jars and 2 inches extra space for boiling. You should also be able to fit at least 5 jars in it with none of them touching. In order to prevent losing the water in the canner up to steam, it must have a snug-fitting cover. You also need a metal rack to keep the jars from touching the bottom of the pot. You can process two layers or decks at a time. If you plan on double decking your jars you will need to place a second rack between the layers of jars.

Low-acid foods include all vegetables (except tomatoes as mentioned above), meats, poultry and fish and must be processed in a pressure canner. The reason being is that these foods require processing above 240 degrees F in order to assure that there are no toxins or bacteria, such as Clostridium botulinum (botulism), remaining and only a pressure canner and achieve these temperatures.

For pressure canning, you really need to have a canner especially made for that purpose. It must contain a rack to keep the jars off the bottom of the pot. Pressure canners have gauges that maintain the pressure inside the pot. There are two types of gauges. One, the weighted gauge will have three markings, one for 5 pounds, 10 pounds or 15 pounds of pressure. Different foods require different pounds of pressure to be process under. The other type of gauge is the dial gauge. People living in higher altitude areas will need this type of gauge. Higher altitudes require the pressure needed by usually 1/2 pound per 1,000 feet above sea level. The recipe for each food will have this information.

Whatever you are going to can, it is important to follow the recommended temperature, pressure and cooking time for each recipe.

Remember, use the appropriate method for the foods you will be canning. For high-acid foods, use the water-bath canner and for low-acid foods always use the pressure canner method. Happy canning.

Cancer Insurance Plans - Who Needs One And How Do You Choose The One That Is Right For You?

During the past 25 years, cancer plans have become increasingly popular. I applied for my first one about 21 years ago, right after I had my daughter. I was a single parent and wanted to be financially responsible. Since I had a new addition in my life, I also took out a new universal life insurance policy

Pressure Canner

Being young and naive myself, after a couple years I dropped the cancer plan thinking the money could be better spent on other needs for my little family. I did not take into consideration that my Grandmother, whom I'd never met, because she had died before I was born was a cancer victim. She died from colon cancer after a long fight and surgery to remove most of her colon which left her with a stoma and an ostomy bag to take care of for the remainder of her life.

Pressure Canner

Around the same time that I dropped my cancer plan, my UNCLE was diagnosed with BREAST CANCER and had a mastectomy. During this time his wife was also diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double radical mastectomy.

Several years later another aunt came down with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. She is now a big advocate for breast cancer cures and treatment and she spends a lot of time doing volunteer work at her local cancer treatment facility.

I am happy to say that both my aunt and my uncle have remained cancer free after their first bout with the disease, but unfortunately they do spend time taking care of my uncle's wife who has not been so lucky. Her breast cancer has metastasized and turned into a stage 4 lung cancer, which is inoperable.

I also had another aunt by marriage, one that I looked up to so very much that I went into nursing because she WAS a nurse and an inspiration to me. I watched her go through the pain of chemotherapy and radiation. I saw my aunt, who was usually an outgoing and vibrant person, lying in that hospital bed covered with burns from the radiation and weak from the chemotherapy fighting for her life. Her cancer, which started out as lung cancer had metastasized into her liver and eventually took her from us.

Seeing all of this cancer in my family, some blood relatives and some not, I started to think about cancer and not only the devastating EFFECTS of cancer treatment on the patient, but also the FINANCIAL BURDENS that were created for family members. I learned this through personal family experience and later on as a nurse, seeing the effects and pressure the disease was putting on the families of the patients in my care.
While still in nursing school:

As a student nurse, my first patient was a cancer patient. When my instructor assigned her to me I was told that she was dying of cancer. I was scared, really scared. I was not sure if I was scared of her dying or scared of the cancer! I was terrified when I walked into her room, but there she was, aside from being a little frail she didn't even look sick. She had colon cancer, the same cancer that killed my grandmother. She was so nice and funny and pleasant. I worked with her week after week in my clinical training and came to really care about her and her husband. When her husband would leave the room, she would tell me that all she really wanted was to go home, but she didn't want to burden her husband with her care.

When I told my instructor this, she told me to find out about hospice care. At that time I had never heard of hospice care and so I had a lot of learning to do. I did all the research and the following week presented my findings to her husband and told him that I would arrange for a hospice nurse to come talk to them. Two days later when I came back to the hospital, she was gone--not deceased--but had gone home to live out the rest of her life, where she wanted to be. I never saw her again. This was a bitter-sweet feeling that I will never forget. I had been with this patient through surgery, through chemo, and we spent many hours just talking.

Getting to know her was one of the reasons that I chose to go into long-term care as a nurse. I didn't want to see patients for 10 minutes and then they leave until the next sniffle brought them back to the doctor's office, and I didn't want to see them in hospitals where they were only there for a couple of days and then sent home.

As a nurse working in a long-term care facility, many of my patients had gone through cancer treatment and many still were in treatment. Many of them were hospice patients who were just being kept comfortable in their last few days.

This was a very hard job, both physically and mentally. There were days when I would leave work and cry in my car all the way home, then try to be a good wife and mother and act as if nothing were wrong. Many nurses go through that and it does take a toll on family life. Remember that!--and thank a nurse next time you meet one.
Leaving nursing for another career:

Several years later, I left nursing in pursuit of another way to not only make a living, but to help others. After all, helping people is the main reason I became a nurse. After a couple of years, and a couple jobs later, I found what I was looking for. I got a job that the public perceives as one step above a used car salesman. Yep!... I became an insurance agent!

I went to work with an internationally recognized supplemental insurance company (Aflac) and started selling mainly cancer plans. (I even sold one to myself!) I continued reading and researching everything I could find about cancer and then one day my mom called me. She needed me to take her to see an oncologist. She had a bad pap and was recommended to see a specialist. I was REALLY scared now! This is not an aunt or uncle, THIS IS MY MOTHER!

At the appointment, the doctor ran some tests and then we had to come back the following week for the results. That was a VERY long week. The waiting and wondering and not knowing was about to drive me crazy. Finally, the day came for the results. My mother was cleared of cancer, but the oncologist sat me down and told me to pass this along also to my sister. She told me that having cancer in your family can be genetic, but having a male in your family with breast cancer makes the risk even greater. She told me to have my cancer testing done yearly and to make sure my sister does also. She also told me something that I always tell my clients when I am talking about the cancer plans that I offer. "Testing, early detection and treatment can save your life."

Just because you do not have a family history of cancer, does not make you immune to the disease. After all SOMEONE has to be FIRST and that someone could be you or a loved one. It is not just genetics that is a determining factor in cancer. At least once a week you hear of something new that causes cancer.
Now that I have related why you NEED a cancer plan, let me tell you how to choose the right plan!

Since not everyone has the same needs, there are different plans available. Here are a few basic questions you should ask when shopping for a cancer plan.

Where is the insurance company ranked on the National Underwriters list? Is the company ranked "A" or higher with A.M. Best? What kind of rate increases have they had in the past? Do I like the representative of the company?
Why are these questions important?

National Underwriters rank companies by their assets, amount of paid premiums and amount of claims paid. This is important because a company who is paying out more than they are taking in may not be around in your time of need or they may be forced to increase rates to stay solvent. The financial security of a company you are going to be doing business with is very important!

A.M. Best is another objective look at the insurance company's financial strength. You should always look to make sure they are at least an "A" or an "A+" or higher rated company with A.M. Best. They set the "benchmark" in the international market.

Many companies have increased the rate of their cancer plans over the years. (I found out just how important this was when my mother asked my aunt "Do you still have your cancer plan with...." And she said NO because they had raised the rate too much.) Make sure that the company you choose has rate stability and does not continually raise rates. Most companies have the right to raise rates by class, but that does not single you out as an individual to increase rates and some companies have NEVER raised the rates on their current policyholders.

It is also important to like the representative of the company you do business with, since that may be the person you speak with to make any changes to your plan or at the time of a claim. This may be someone with whom you will need to share personal information, so trust is important.

Heavy Cast Aluminum Pressure Cooker/Canner

All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner Specifications

This heavy-duty pressure cooker's large capacity is probably best utilized for canning (though it would also be great for a number of cooking tasks). A pressure cooker is generally recommended when canning vegetables and nonacid fruit, since the high heat that can be generated will kill more bacteria than a regular hot water bath. Made from cast aluminum, with sturdy screws to seal the lid to the pot, this pressure cooker requires no rubber or plastic gaskets or rings. Its 15-1/2-quart capacity holds 10 pint jars or 7 quart jars. A three-setting pressure regulator valve is included, and the pressure gauge gives a clear reading. Made in Wisconsin, this is an American classic. --Julija Gelazis
