You gotta admit this is brilliant; canning and food preservation. People have been doing it for a very long time and it's growing in popularity thanks to the recession. Anything people can do to save money is worth considering and canning food is high up on the list.
In our town we even have a community garden where people can tend their own plot of land for free, they just have to keep it weeded and out of other people's areas. The food grown there is being stored in massive amounts, as much as they can get.
Pressure Canner
Canning is big in my family, especially on my husband's side. My mother in law is great at canning and will devote a full day to the event in order to get as much done as she can. During the winter when we get to eat the fruits of her efforts we're all quite grateful. She's very particular about safety and is always sure to use the right kind of cans or jars, the right pressure canner and label everything so we know what it is and when it was done. Don't want to let anything spoil or rot.
Her favorite things to can are meats, fruits and vegetables. We also freeze fresh corn for winter use and that's always a big hit. These are all pretty big jobs to start and you can't just quit in the middle. But the efforts are obvious and immediate. The tools are easy to clean up and now we have food in storage to be eaten later. I love it!
